HOW TO CARRY YOUR EXPERIMENT OUT SAFELY AND ACCURATELY

When experimenting there are various things to keep in mind such as…

  • Safety

  • Keeping the test fair

  • Recording accurate data

Keeping safe in an experiment is just as important as the final results! You may encounter unknown gases or liquids that you may not know how to handle or dispose of. Keep in mind that you can’t see or smell some types of gases...and if you’re exposed to them for too long it can be quite dangerous. So when conducting experiments in the laboratory make sure you;

  • Wear covered shoes

  • Keep your hair up

  • Wear appropriate protective gear

  • Wear a lab coat and safety goggles

When experimenting at home, some of the safety measures listed above may not apply, however it is worth the time to consider your options for a real science experiment!

As mentioned under the How to design a fair test (Scientific Method) category, keeping your test fair and concise is necessary to collect accurate and correct data. In this experiment, we would make sure to keep the constant variables the same and only change the independent variable. If we changed the constant variable it would lead to inaccurate results!

When conducting your investigation it is important to consider how you plan on recording your data and analysing it. To begin with, it is important to have an accurate method of recording your data! In this case, we are recording the time it takes for 4 vitamin C tablets of different amounts of pieces to dissolve in water. Suggested ways of recording this would be to make a data table! By recording your results in a table such as this you can keep an accurate account of all the necessary variables such as time, tablet piece and the time it takes for all of them to dissolve.
