OUR EXPERIMENT

WHAT ARE WE EXPERIMENTING

Well today we are going to investigate how fast a vitamin C tablet will dissolve in water whilst using different surface areas! Here is how you can do this!!

MATERIALS!

  • Vitamin C tablet pack x1

  • Beaker or CUP (500mL) x4

  • Stopwatch or your phone! x1

  • Small bowl x1

  • Water (400~450mL) x 4

  • Template x1

  • Tissue

The experiment will be looking at the rate of reaction and how surface area contributes to the acceleration or declaration of the process.

  1. Begin the experiment by taking out 4 Vitamin C tablets from the pack and placing them on the table.

  2. Place one of the vitamin C tablets aside for the time being.

  3. Take 4 500ml cups and fill them up with water to about 450ml. (If you don’t have a measuring cup try to fill up the cup to about ¾.

  4. With the help of an adult, divide one of the Vitamin C tablets into halves (½) and put both pieces aside

  5. Begin by placing the first whole tablet into a glass/cup of water, start the timer and let the reaction run until the vitamin C tablet completely dissolved

  6. Stop the timer and record the time when the tablet has fully dissolved in the water.

  7. Take the third tablet and divide it into quarters (¼) and place the four pieces to the side

  8. With the help of an adult, use a knife or spoon to crush the fourth Vitamin C tablet until it is fully crushed and place the powder on a card or tissue paper.

  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for the rest of the tablets, (two halves, quarters and crushed tablet).

  10. Record the difference in time between each of the tablets for how long they took to dissolve in water.

METHOD!

HAZARDS!

  1. Seek approval from a parental guardian before using any Vitamin C tablets or any medical material for experimentation.

  2. Take caution if working with any glass equipment such as, glass cups, containers or jugs.

  3. Make sure an adult or peer is present while performing steps 4 and 5 as it includes the use of a knife.

  4. You may want to request the help of a peer or adult when performing steps that require timing of the Vitamin C tablet.
